Maggie was raised in rural central North Carolina, where raising most of their own food was the norm. Eating homecooked food, and growing garden-fresh food was an important part of her early years. After high school, Maggie left her country life to pursue higher education in the larger cities. While in College she obtained two bachelor's and a master's degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her career has required living in larger cities for the last 20 years. Recently, she has been feeling the draw to return to her country roots, which lead to chicken ownership in her suburban neighborhood in 2020. This introduction was all it took to get Kevin, her husband, hooked! There is nothing like the favor of farm fresh eggs, and those tiny birds are so friendly. A very enjoyable addition to our back yard!
Kevin grew up traveling the world, as his father was in the Air Force. He spent his early childhood in the Philippines, elementary school in California, Middle School in Germany, High School on the Gulf Coase of Florida. After High School he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Southern California. His life experiences were well beyond most others our age! After his father retired from the Air Force, his parents moved back to NE Oklahoma, where they were raised.
Kevin's work took him to South Carolina where we met in 2015. Kevin brought 2 kids into our family, that Maggie quickly claimed; a son, who is continuing the family tradition in the military, and a daughter, who is currently in college at the University of South Carolina. After our kids had moved out and started their own lives, Kevin was also ready to settle down and have a place he could call home, someplace stable where the kids would know they can always find us. We decided on NE Oklahoma, as well, where we purchased our 26-acre homestead. We are enjoying the family time near his parents and brothers!
This stability has provided us the opportunity to start producing our own food in 2022. While we continue to enjoy fresh eggs, those first 9 chickens came with us, we have added more chickens, geese, Guinea Fowl! We have also enjoyed a garden larger than any garden we could have planted in the suburbs. We raised our own meat chickens in our pasture, and started raising American Guinea Hogs, a heritage pasture breed, as well.
