Maggie grew up in rural central North Carolina, where fresh, local food was simply part of everyday life. Her family kept a small garden, and her grandparents grew grapes, apples, and figs. Most of the family’s food came from neighboring farms—something her parents still do today. Home-cooked meals and seasonal produce shaped Maggie’s love of simple, honest food long before she realized it.
After high school, Maggie attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree. For nearly 20 years, her career kept her in larger cities, but she always felt the pull of country life. That pull eventually led to her first backyard chickens in 2020—an adventure that quickly won over her husband, Kevin. There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh eggs or the charm of tiny, feathered personalities.
Kevin’s upbringing was a world apart. As the son of an Air Force service member, he spent his childhood in the Philippines, attended elementary school in California, middle school in Germany, and high school along the Gulf Coast of Florida. After graduation he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Southern California. His life experiences stretched across continents long before most people his age had left their hometowns. After his father retired, his parents returned to their roots in Northeast Oklahoma.
Kevin’s work eventually brought him to South Carolina, where he and Maggie met in 2015. Kevin brought two children into their family, whom Maggie quickly embraced as her own—one now continuing the family tradition of military service, and the other a recent graduate of the University of South Carolina. As their kids grew up and began lives of their own, Kevin felt ready to put down roots and create a stable home base—a place the kids would always know they could return to.
Together, Maggie and Kevin chose Northeast Oklahoma and purchased their 26-acre homestead. Being close to Kevin’s parents and brothers has made it truly feel like home.
In 2022, that stability allowed them to begin producing more of their own food. The original nine chickens came with them, and they soon added more laying hens, geese, and guinea fowl. Their garden—still a work in progress—has been an ongoing learning experience, with the long-term goal of one day growing a large, thriving garden.
That same year, they added American Guinea Hogs, a heritage breed known for its friendly temperament and suitability for pasture-based systems. Today, they are slowly transitioning to Large Black pigs, appreciating their larger size while still keeping the gentle, personable nature they enjoy so much in their pigs. The farm also raises pasture-raised meat chickens and continues to expand its rotational grazing system.
The Homestead at ’Possum Junction continues to grow with the seasons—one project, one pasture, and one homegrown meal at a time.
